Heated at temperatures that reach 2,000 degrees, the bronze undergoes a cooling process. Once cooled, imperfections are eliminated with grinding techniques. This is also when the engraving is completed. After the grinding, each headstone must go through an oxidation process before it’s ready for shipping.
Granite Headstones
Granite headstones have been used in cemeteries around the world for centuries. The granite is naturally strong and durable. Making these headstones involves a 3-step process. First, the granite must be obtained from a quarry. It should be selected carefully to avoid natural cracks and fissures. Then, the granite needs to be polished and prepared for engraving. After the granite has been adequately polished, stencils are created. Some cemeteries create these stencils by hand. Others use computers to generate them.
The stencils are applied to the granite headstone and engraving begins. Typically, cemeteries will use an air hose with enough pressure to carve the lettering from the stencils into the granite. Once the engraving has been completed, the lines are filled with black in order to make the lettering stand out.
